Summary
Why learn (or relearn) CPR and have an AED onsite?
Cardiac arrest is the leading killer in the nation for both male and female adults. A cardiac event is happening every 39 seconds! Though sudden cardiac arrest is most common, someone can also die from secondary cardiac arrest. Both sudden cardiac arrest and secondary cardiac arrest can happen to persons of any age, and there is value in understanding the important difference of both.
When someone is in cardiac arrest, without receiving defibrillation, their chance for successful resuscitation could diminish by 10% every minute. Quality CPR matters, but rarely restores the heart rhythm, so having an AED onsite is crucial for total care. But AEDs are not jumper cables! In this course learn not only the current guidelines but the real understanding of what Chest compressions do, what an AED is designed to do and how best the two work. It’s like a seat belt and air bag.
Does quality CPR matter?
Yes! There is value to all life and any effort someone makes on behalf of another individual needs to be commended. But quality does matter. Although quality CPR by no means guarantees success, it can absolutely increase the odds for success.
While learning the latest international guidelines, Shawn Ritchey L.I.V.E. will also provide practical and relevant steps for remembering your skill.
Emergency Oxygen can also be an added component to the training if needed.
Additionally, Shawn Ritchey L.I.V.E. provides in-depth trauma care training that can be included as another session or as a stand-alone course. https://shawnritchey.com/educator/#stop
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) defines first aid as “emergency care provided for injury or sudden illness before professional medical treatment becomes available.” Any recognized curriculum will train you to OSHA’s definition. But consider what Shawn Ritchey L.I.V.E. can add…
- Clear understanding of how the body responds during an emergency.
- The answer to the question, “why S.T.O.P. before go”?
- Discover the value of comfort-care as legitimate first aid.
- Consider the benefit of rescue breathing for someone without “sucking face”.
- Tailored onsite scenarios.
- Practical solutions to incorporating international guidelines for first aid.
- Dramatic demonstrations of various conditions such as cardiac arrest, heart attack (male and female), seizure, stroke and more…
- Situational Awareness and Patient Assessment should go hand-n-hand.
- Consider what happens when they don’t (see 1/2 video below)
- Consider this alternative when assessing someone for possible CPR (see 2/2 video below)
More than 4 million people suffer non-fatal injury or illness each year in the workplace. In the United States about one third of all injuries and one fifth of all injury deaths happen at home. This is why staying skilled in first aid is so important.
Course
All First Aid related courses meet or exceed State (WA State Labor & Industry) and Federal (OSHA) requirements. In this course you will learn basic first aid to the level and depth your organization wants to take it. Training curriculum options are available in American Safety & Health (ASHI), American Heart Association (AHA), EMS Safety or Medic First Aid.
Shawn Ritchey L.I.V.E. regularly tailors first aid courses for businesses and organizations including but not limited to: athletic teams, camps, construction firms, convention centers, daycare, law enforcement, local/state/federal agencies, office complexes, PUDs, school districts (students and teachers), Scouts, water districts, and more.

(HCP) CPR/AED (in class or blended learning – see below for more details)
“I can’t describe it. Your heart!!!!!!! Your enthusiasm, your frankness, your experience, your didactics, your precision, how much you care. I’m amazed!”
- Student, Bastyr University, Bothell, WA
Summary
As Healthcare providers you recognize you have not only a desire, but a duty to act when on the job and an ill or injured person is present. But still consider…
Why learn (or relearn) CPR?
Cardiac arrest is the leading killer in the nation for both male and female adults. A cardiac event is happening every 39 seconds!
Though sudden cardiac arrest is most common, someone can also die from secondary cardiac arrest. Both sudden cardiac arrest and secondary cardiac arrest can happen to persons of any age.
Does quality matter with CPR?
There is value to all life and so any attempt when offering care on an ill or injured person is to be commended. However, as a Healthcare Professional, it is very important to remember that High Quality CPR or High Performance CPR really can make a significant difference with the outcome.
But also remember that Situational Awareness and Patient Assessment should go hand-n-hand. Consider what happens if they don’t. (see 1/2 video below)
Consider this alternative when assessing someone for possible CPR. (see 2/2 video below)
While learning the latest international guidelines, Shawn Ritchey L.I.V.E. will also provide practical and relevant steps for remembering your skills.

Summary
Maintaining life, breath, or “buying time” for an ill or injured person in the back country can have many difficult challenges. Shawn Ritchey L.I.V.E. considers the importance of three words that become a recurring theme during this training. Those words are: exposure, fear, and hydration. And that theme is dealt with for both the rescuer as well as the patient!
Shawn Ritchey L.I.V.E. will equip you through dynamic, practical and relevant training.
Consider the following questions and thoughts:
- S.T.O.P. before you Go! The critical first step in emergency care
- How considering S.A.M. can help assess either men or women!
- Why is it a good idea to keep the “good side up”?
- Is comfort care first aid?
- What do quality CPR and quality Wound-care have in common?
- Why is understanding breathing key to successfully stabilizing any musculoskeletal injury?
- What’s important to consider when caring for someone over hours/days verses minutes?
- And so much more…

Course
Utilizing American Safety & Health Institute’s (ASHI) Wilderness First Aid, Homeland Security Citizens Emergency Response Training (CERT), and Shawn Ritchey L.I.V.E. concepts for buying time, the premise of this course is to focus on longer-term care for the patient, as well as continued maintenance for the rescuer. Training is typically between 18-22 hours.
