3. The Good Samaritan: Why was the Story Told?

The Good Samaritan was not told as a story because it was Jesus' turn to do children's story at synagogue. It was told because a lawyer asked Jesus two specific questions. The first seemed promising, "What do I need to do to inherit eternal life?" Part of the lawyers answer includes Leviticus 19:18 which was viewed as the second greatest commandment for the Jewish people.

You shall love your neighbor as yourself."

As Jesus affirms in him that he has answered well, the lawyer then adds this questions, "But who is my neighbor?"

This second question reveals not only does the man want to justify himself, but is also looking to test Jesus.

Consider these reasons and be ready to hear the parable anew on the next post.
